Nine sites were sampled 19 times over 2 years in an irrigation system in Morocco in order to study species abundance in a snail community in relation to environmental parameters (including human activities) and migration (geographic distance) among sites. Each site was made of a sink and the first meters of the downstream canal. The snail community included four species (Bulinus truncatus, Lymnaea truncatula, Mercuria similis and Physa acuta). Strong spatial variation in species occurrence and abundance was detected which might be partly due to variation in water availability. However abundance in sinks and canals in which water availability differs were correlated. There was, as predicted, limited evidence in favor of isolation by distance which might be due to fast water current. Dispersal might therefore be an important factor structuring this community. On the other hand, the temporal variation was much more limited. This is consistent with the analysis of individual size distributions in B. truncatus, since no clear-cut cohorts were detected. The environmental parameters recorded (e.g. temperature, occurrence of macrophytes or cleaning of sinks) were extremely variable in time and space, except temperature. Analyzing their association with species through multidimensional methods indicated that P. acuta is ubiquitous and B. truncatus positively associated with macrophytes. These two species were associated in sinks. Less clear trends were detected for the two other species. Annual cleaning of sinks affected all species, but population recovery was fast in B. truncatus and P. acuta.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of short-term changes in discharge on plankton dynamics, a station in the upper reaches of the Schelde estuary was monitored during 1 month in spring 1998 with a sampling frequency of 1–2 days. During this monitoring period, a flood event occurred during which discharge increased about 5-fold. This flood event had a strong effect on the composition of the planktonic community. Rotifers were strongly negatively affected by the flood event while densities of heterotrophic nanoflagellates and scuticociliates increased. Chlorophyll a concentration and abundance of bacteria, oligotrich ciliates and crustacean zooplankton did not respond clearly to the flood event. Although the flood event lasted only a few days it took more than 2 weeks for the planktonic community to return to its original composition.  相似文献

While changes in dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations are expected to affect zooplankton species through attenuation of potentially damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation, generation of potentially beneficial or harmful photoproducts, pH alteration, and microbial food web stimulation, the combined effects of such changes on zooplankton community structure have not been studied previously. Our purpose was to determine how an increase in allochthonous DOM and associated changes in pH in an initially transparent lake may affect zooplankton community structure, and how exposure to solar UV may alter these DOM and pH effects. We ran microcosm experiments manipulating UV, DOM, and pH near the surface of Lake Giles in northeastern Pennsylvania. We found that when DOM was added in the presence of ambient UV, Daphnia and copepod UV-mortality was reduced by approximately three and two times compared to UV exposure without extra DOM. When DOM was added in the absence of UV, adult Daphnia and copepods were reduced compared to no DOM addition in the absence of UV. Daphnia and cyclopoid egg production and rotifer abundance were generally higher in the presence of DOM, regardless of UV treatment. The lower abundance yet high egg production in the presence of DOM and absence of UV may be explained by higher abundance of egg-bearing adults compared to non-egg-bearers. We conclude that allochthonous DOM benefits some zooplankton in a high-UV environment, but may be detrimental under low-UV conditions. Overall, Daphnia abundance and egg production were higher than that of calanoid copepods in the DOM additions, indicating that in some lakes an increase in allochthonous DOM may lead to a zooplankton community shift favoring Daphnia over calanoid copepods.  相似文献

Aim  There is no previous direct evidence for the occurrence of lacustrine refuges for invertebrate fauna in Antarctica spanning the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In the absence of verified LGM lacustrine refuges many species are believed to result from Holocene dispersal from sub-Antarctic islands and continents further north. If freshwater lake environments were present throughout the LGM, extant freshwater species may have been associated with Antarctica prior to this glacial period. This study looked at faunal microfossils in a sediment core from an Antarctic freshwater lake. This lake is unusual in that, unlike most Antarctic lakes, the sediment record extends to c . 130,000 yr bp , i.e. prior to the LGM.
Location  Lake Reid, Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica (76°23' E; 69°23' S).
Methods  Palaeofaunal communities in Lake Reid were identified through examination of faunal microfossils in a sediment core that extended to c . 130,000 yr bp .
Results  Ephippia and mandibles from the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri and loricae of the rotifer Notholca sp. were found at all depths in the sediment, indicating that these two species have been present in the lake for up to 130,000 years. Copepod mandibles were also present in the older section of the core, yet were absent from the most recent sediments, indicating extinction of this species from Lake Reid during the LGM.
Main conclusion  The presence of D. studeri and Notholca sp. microfossils throughout the entire Lake Reid core is the first direct evidence of a glacial lacustrine refugium for invertebrate animals in Antarctica, and indicates the presence of a relict fauna on the Antarctic continent.  相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate the suitability of Colilert-18 in detecting Escherichia coli and total coliforms in tropical freshwater samples. METHODS AND RESULTS: Target organisms were isolated from yellow-fluorescent and yellow wells of Colilert-18/Quanti-Tray using m-TEC agar and m-ENDO LES agar respectively. All the selected isolates were first identified based on their fatty acid methyl ester profile. Isolates showing contradictory results to that of the Colilert-18 procedure were re-identified using API 20E strips. A total of 357 isolates, 177 from yellow-fluorescent wells and 180 from yellow wells, were identified. CONCLUSIONS: The false-positive and -negative rates for E. coli detection using Colilert-18 were 36.4% and 11%, respectively, while for coliform detection the false-positive rate was 10.3%. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The high false-positive rate of Colilert-18, tempers its value for E. coli detection when used for tropical freshwater samples.  相似文献

Limnoperna fortunei (Bivalvia, Mitylidae) was introduced into South America in 1991 in the La Plata River (Argentina). It arrived in the ballast water of ships coming from Asia, where this species is native. It was first observed in 1998 in the Paraguay River. Limnoperna was introduced into the Pantanal region as hull fouling of vessels using the Paraguay–Parana waterway. This study describes how L. fortunei came to the Pantanal region, and provides details of its occurrence, density, and impacts. From 1999 to 2002, observations and sampling on natural and artificial substrates in the Paraguay River were made. Some aspects of the spread and impacts, based on local community information, were also analyzed. On artificial substrate the density reached 523.8 individuals m−2 and on natural substrate (rocks), up to 10,000 individuals m−2 were found. The densities observed were quite low compared to those found in Southern Brazil, where values up to 100,000 individuals m−2 have been recorded in the last 3 years. In the Paraguay River, the population density of L. fortunei can be negatively impacted by periodic low levels of dissolved oxygen and decreases in pH to between 5 and 6. Such conditions are frequently present during the periodic flooding or inundation of this area. Under these conditions, a high mortality of L. fortunei was recorded in March of 2002, on both natural and artificial substrates. Despite low densities, L. fortunei can colonize water cooling systems of boats, obstructing water circulation and causing motor overheating. Accumulation in water supply equipment, such as pumps and pipes has also been observed. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

Stoichiometric constraints within ecological interactions and their ecosystem consequences may depend on characteristics of the abiotic environment such as background nutrient levels. We assessed whether consumer identity, via differing body stoichiometry, could regulate periphyton stoichiometry across nutrient regimes in open systems. In 60 flow-through artificial streams, we factorially crossed dissolved inorganic nitrogen levels (elevated = 294  μ g L−1, ambient = 26  μ g L−1) with dissolved inorganic phosphorus levels (DIP: elevated = 15  μ g L−1, ambient = 3  μ g L−1) and consumer type [crayfish (body N : P = 18), snails (body N : P = 28) or a control]. At ambient DIP, periphyton in the crayfish treatment had a lower %P and a lower C : P than periphyton in the snail treatment suggesting that consumer identity, probably mediated by differing P-excretion, regulated periphyton P content. At high DIP, consumer identity no longer affected periphyton elemental composition. Therefore, the stoichiometry of consumer-driven nutrient recycling and consumer identity may be less important to ecosystem functioning in environments with elevated nutrient levels.  相似文献

Turtles are a small taxon that has nevertheless attracted much attention from biologists for centuries. However, a major portion of their life cycle has received relatively little attention until recently - namely what turtles are doing, and how they are doing it, during the winter. In the northern parts of their ranges in North America, turtles may spend more than half of their lives in an overwintering state. In this review, I emphasise the ecological aspects of overwintering among turtles, and consider how overwintering stresses affect the physiology, behaviour, distributions, and life histories of various species.Sea turtles are the only group of turtles that migrate extensively, and can therefore avoid northern winters. Nevertheless, each year a number of turtles, largely juveniles, are killed when trapped by cold fronts before they move to safer waters. Evidently this risk is an acceptable trade-off for the benefits to a population of inhabiting northern developmental habitats during the summer.Terrestrial turtles pass the winter underground, either in burrows that they excavate or that are preformed. These refugia must provide protection against desiccation and lethal freezing levels. Some burrows are extensive (tortoise genus Gopherus), while others are shallow, or the turtles may simply dig into the ground to a safe depth (turtle genus Terrapene). In the latter genus, freeze tolerance may play an adaptive role. Most non-marine aquatic turtles overwinter underwater, although Clemmys (Actinemys) marmorata routinely overwinters on land when it occurs in riverine habitats, Kinosternon subrubrum often overwinters on land, and several others may overwinter terrestrially on occasion, especially in more southern climates. For northern species that overwinter underwater, there are two physiological groupings, those that are anoxia-tolerant and those that are relatively anoxia-intolerant. All species fare well physiologically in water with a high partial pressure of oxygen (PO2). A lack of anoxia tolerance limits the types of habitats that a freshwater turtle may live in, since unlike sea turtles, they cannot travel long distances to hibernate.Hatchlings of some species of turtles spend their first winter in or below the nest cavity, while hatchlings of other species in the same area, including northern areas, emerge in the autumn and presumably hibernate underwater. All hatchlings are relatively anoxia-intolerant, and there are no studies to date of where hatchling turtles that do not overwinter in or below the nest cavity spend their first winter. Equally little is known of the ontogeny of anoxia tolerance, other than that adults of all species are more anoxia-tolerant than their hatchlings, probably because of their better ossified shells, which provide adults with more buffer reserves and a larger site in which to sequester lactate. The northern limits of turtles are most likely determined by reproductive limitations (time for egg-laying, incubation, and hatching) than by the rigors of hibernation.Mortality is typically lower in turtle populations during hibernation than it is during their active periods. However, episodic mortality events do occur during hibernation, due to freezing, prolonged anoxia, or predation.  相似文献
